Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on Manchester United’s pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo amid a quiet week of transfers at Old Trafford.
Manchester United are close to finalising their second signing of the summer, having already announced the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month.
The 26-year-old Brazilian international will complete his £62.5 million move once he returns from international duty, at which point he’ll put pen to paper on a five-year deal.
Rúben Amorim is still actively looking to boost his attacking options, with Bryan Mbeumo emerging as a top target. The Brentford forward is keen on a move to Old Trafford and has made his intentions clear.
Although Brentford turned down a bid worth up to £55 million earlier this month, talks remain ongoing, and United are pushing to strike a deal soon.
Romano provides Mbeumo transfer update
Since United’s opening bid at the beginning of June, the move for Mbeumo has gone relatively quiet, with the only significant news being that Tottenham will attempt to sign the player if United cannot agree on a fee with Brentford.
Despite the apparent lack of significant progress, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has made it clear that negotiations are ongoing, with the two clubs engaging in regular conversations to find a compromise that both are willing to agree on.
“What I’m hearing at the moment is that the conversations, club to club, Man United-Brentford, is still ongoing, is still underway,” Romano confirmed on his YouTube channel.
“So, talks are ongoing for this story, talks are ongoing for this deal, but at the moment, we are still waiting for Manchester United to try to reach an agreement on the fee with Brentford. They tried with the first bid, it was 10 days ago, rejected by Brentford.
“Man United remaining in conversations, they are trying to find a way.”
Sales will be crucial for United
United are being very firm with the fees they are willing to pay this summer, with a significant reason for this being the lack of available funds prior to selling some of Amorim’s high-value assets.
Romano continued to explain that, while exits will be important at the club, they are working on the Mbeumo deal irrespective of the sales.
“Remember how important will be the outgoings for Manchester United this summer,” the Italian continued. “We said about the goalkeeper, but for example, there are many players who are completely out of the project.
“And so, [Marcus] Rashford, [Jadon] Sancho, let’s see what’s going to happen also with the situation of [Alejandro] Garnacho, who is still expected to leave Manchester United. So, all these players to leave can generate money and funds for players to join Manchester United in this summer transfer window.
“So, we have to be patient, see what’s going to happen with the exits. Meanwhile, Manchester United are still working on the Bryan Mbeumo deal with Brentford.”
