Fabrizio Romano explains how Chelsea feel about Jadon Sancho’s buy clause after Manchester United issue
Fabrizio Romano has explained how Chelsea now feel about Jadon Sancho following his recent spat with Manchester United fans after Marcus Rashford’s Aston Villa debut.
Jadon Sancho joined Chelsea on loan for the entire 2024/25 season and is set to make the move permanent in the summer for £25 million.
The winger, who arrived at Manchester United in 2021 for £75 million, struggled to make a lasting impact at Old Trafford and fell out with then-manager Erik ten Hag in late 2023.
Following his dispute with Ten Hag, Sancho returned to Borussia Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign. Although he rejoined United for pre-season in 2024, he did not feature in any of the club’s opening fixtures before securing a deadline day loan move to Chelsea.
Since arriving at Stamford Bridge, Sancho has made 22 appearances, scoring twice and providing six assists. However, his form has come under scrutiny in recent weeks, with just one goal contribution in his last 12 matches.
What Chelsea think about Sancho
Last week, Sancho caused upset among United’s fanbase after he commented the word “freedom” under Marcus Rashford’s recent Instagram post celebrating his loan move to Aston Villa after spending six weeks out of the team under Rúben Amorim.
This, combined with Sancho’s poor form of late, has made some wonder if Chelsea regrets installing the £25 million buy clause in his loan deal. However, Fabrizio Romano has now clarified that the London club continue to be happy with the player despite recent criticism.
“Jadon Sancho, we have seen some criticism in recent weeks, he’s not performing like he was at the beginning of the season,” Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“But I can guarantee to you Chelsea are still very happy with the signing of Jadon Sancho, the obligation to buy is not in doubt, it’s just the amount of add-ons that is going to change based on the position of Chelsea in the Premier League.
“Chelsea remain very satisfied with the signing of Sancho and whilst this is not the best moment for the player, in general, to invest in a player like Sancho, Chelsea internally see it as a good idea.”
Sancho ripped into for recent behaviour
After United paid £75 million for Sancho in the summer of 2021, many fans thought he was the eventual heir to the famed No. 7 shirt at Old Trafford.

However, the player’s career never worked out at United, and fans took poorly to his falling out with Ten Hag despite being granted an extended period of leave to help recover from reported mental health struggles.
“Jadon Sancho reminds me of a weak little boy who is using someone else to air his grievances. He doesn’t have the strength, power, or presence to do it on his own, so he’s trying to drag Rashford into his mess,” former United defender Paul Parker said earlier this week in relation to his Rashford comment.
“I hope Rashford is smart enough to stay out of it. Even his PR team should know better than to let him get involved in this nonsense.
“Sancho is trying to shift focus away from himself, but in reality, he should be looking in the mirror.”
