Fabrizio Romano has spoken on the importance of a certain “leader” and how he can play a crucial role for Rúben Amorim’s Manchester United.
After a full summer transfer window, Rúben Amorim has shaped his Manchester United side for the 2025/26 Premier League season.
With three crucial signings made so far this summer, the club aims to build on an already strong squad and improve on what was their worst season of football in recent years.
Bruno Fernandes will remain captain for next season. Still, Amorim has been searching the ranks of the squad to find other leaders, as the manager hopes to instil a sense of accountability for future games.
This has led to the formation of Amorim’s new six-man leadership group, consisting of a few of the squad’s senior players and the “leader” Romano mentions.
“Important” Maguire respected by Amorim
Since his arrival in 2019, Harry Maguire has had a contrasting career in Manchester, capturing the hearts of the Stretford End and being appointed captain, only to be stripped of the captaincy under former manager Erik ten Hag.
Now under new management, the 32-year-old has found another gear, being trusted at the back in 40 games last year, and has recently been named a member of Amorim’s new leadership group.
On his YouTube Channel, Fabrizio Romano commented on the relationship between Maguire and Amorim: “He’s a really important player for Ruben Amorim, on but also off the pitch, in terms of leadership. But also, Amorim really appreciates Harry Maguire, his skills, his mentality.”
As the club’s most expensive defender in its history, Maguire came with great expectations. Despite a difficult few years under a hostile and changing regime, the Englishman has overcome a tremendous amount of adversity to be favoured by Amorim.
Maguire in Amorim’s plans
After featuring only ten minutes against Arsenal on Sunday, the defender will be aiming to break back into the starting eleven for future games, ahead of Matthijs de Ligt, who seems to have taken the central centre-back role.
Despite this, Maguire only has one year left on his contract, and his game time may be hampered by the absence of a long-term commitment, leading to a tough predicament for the club and Maguire’s camp.
“It’s not guaranteed at this stage, but the potential extension for Maguire and Manchester United will also be discussed in the next months. So be attentive to the situation of Harry Maguire, because it could be one to watch in terms of contract extension, in this case, for Manchester United,” said Romano later in the video.
The transfer guru seems optimistic about the possibility of an extension; however, as he says, there is nothing guaranteed.
That said, Maguire will undoubtedly feature numerous times for United this season, as one of the squad’s senior players, a leader, and best defenders.
