Fabrizio Romano has delivered an exciting update about Manchester United starlet Chido Obi Martin this season.

Manchester United secured the signing of Chido Obi Martin shortly after the summer transfer window, following his decision to reject a contract extension at Arsenal.

Despite more lucrative offers from Bundesliga clubs, the highly-rated young striker chose United and made an immediate impact, scoring a hat-trick in just 14 minutes on his first start for the Under-18s.

A clinical goalscorer with the physical attributes to progress to higher levels, Obi Martin initially needed to refine his overall play, especially after missing pre-season.

However, in recent months, he has improved his ability to receive the ball with his back to goal and link up effectively with teammates and has moved into the Under-21s squad.

Of course, fans at United were desperate to see the club sign a striker before the mid-season transfer deadline.

Ruben Amorim’s first-team has struggled in the goalscoring department and the attacking depth is weaker after Marcus Rashford and Antony departed on loan.

After it was confirmed that no other strikers would come in, some began suggesting that Academy players will need to step up such as Obi Martin.

Following on from that, Fabrizio Romano has admitted that he wouldn’t be surprised to see the 17-year-old get his first-team debut before the end of the season.

“Man United always saw Chido as part of a future first squad plan, so I’d not be surprised if he gets the chance from now to the end of the season to join the first team,” the Italian journalist told GiveMeSport. “But nothing is confirmed at this stage.”

Other Academy stars on fringes of United first-team

Obi Martin is not the only player from the youth teams who could push for a debut this season.

There is a bunch of talent within the walls at Carrington and despite many bright players heading out on loans, there are still players at the club who could push for a place in Amorim’s squad.

Godwill Kukonki is the first player who comes to mind since he has already been involved in several matchday squads under Amorim.

Midfield duo Sekou Kone and Jack Moorhouse also look like they could push themselves into conversations.

Finally, Bendito Mantato is a player who would be of interest to Amorim due to his potential to play in the wingback position. The teenager has recently been out with an injury but has previously been suggested as a player Amorim would like.
