Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United could receive a potential £2 million boost this summer after a change in strategy.
Manchester United have suffered a disappointing domestic season, currently sitting 16th in the Premier League as the campaign draws to a close.
Although they still have a shot at silverware in the Europa League, lifting the trophy won’t be enough to fix the deeper problems at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim understands the scale of the task ahead and is pushing for major changes during the summer as he gears up for his first full season in charge.
The club plans to overhaul the squad, with several signings and player exits expected, as they aim to give Amorim the best possible platform for success after a difficult start.
Those sales will generate money for United to spend, but there are also some players who have already left the club who could also fetch their former club some extra cash this summer.
Fabrizio Romano confirms potential £2m boost for United
United have been criticised for their ability to sell players for good prices in recent years, especially those from the Academy setup.
However, they have had a conscious change to start including attractive clauses in contracts when younger players leave them, such as sell-on fees.
They are set to earn around 50 per cent of the profit Marseille make if they decide to sell Mason Greenwood this summer.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano that the Reds will be getting 40 per cent of the fee Legia Warsaw receive for Maxi Oyedele, who has a £5m release clause. That would be an extra £2 million for the Reds.
Oyedele left United last summer for around £500,000 despite impressing in pre-season under Erik ten Hag. After a positive season in Poland, Romano has claimed that there are many European clubs ‘keen’ on signing him this summer.
While the cash is not huge in isolation, these kind of clauses across several deals can stack up. Alvaro Fernandez also has a ‘significant sell-on clause’ in his Benfica contract and he’s currently being chased by Real Madrid.
Fernandes was surprised at Oyedele’s exit
It is not a huge surprise to see clubs interested in Oyedele this summer after he impressed United players during his time training with the first-team.
In fact, last year the Legia Warsaw coach, Goncalo Feio, claimed that Bruno Fernandes was ‘shocked’ at United’s decision to sell Oyedele before giving him a chance in the first-team.
“It is no coincidence that Bruno Fernandes, when we spoke to him, said he was shocked that United were letting him go, because he looked great in pre-season with Manchester,” Feio said.
It remains to be seen where Oyedele’s future lies but it looks likely that United will be pocketing some extra cash this summer.
