Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United’s next major transfer decision is set to be made soon as the Premier League season gets underway.
Manchester United are entering the final stages of their summer business, with Rúben Amorim continuing to strengthen his squad.
So far in the 2025 transfer window, United have brought in four new faces: Matheus Cunha, Diego Leon, Bryan Mbeumo, and their latest addition up front, Benjamin Šeško.
The club have invested roughly £214 million on these signings, with all but Leon costing over £60 million. Even so, Amorim still wants to add a midfielder and a goalkeeper in the coming weeks.
However, United will need to generate funds through player sales before making further moves.
Romano confirms goalkeeper decision to be made
In the last week or so, there have been many reports surrounding the club’s pursuit of Gianluigi Donnarumma, who has been ostracised from Paris Saint-Germain’s starting XI.
It has been reported that United are set to meet with the Italian star’s agent in the coming days as they look to explore the possibility of a summer deal. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that United are yet to decide whether they would rather target a young or senior shot-stopper.
“Manchester United still have to decide whether they want to try to find the goalkeeper who is for the future like [Senne] Lammens, who is very talented, and Royal Antwerp is not expensive in terms not only of transfer fee but also salary, or if they want to spend big money on the goalkeeper,” Romano explained on his YouTube channel surrounding United’s next major transfer decision.
“In that case, Donnarumma and [Emi] Martínez, these kind of names, are obviously way more expensive transfer fee salary, so Manchester United need to decide what they want to do.
“This will probably depend also on what happens with their goalkeepers, so at the moment it’s not something really concrete or advanced for Manchester United because it still needs an internal decision on the goalkeeper case in general.”
With only a few weeks left until the summer window closes, it’s thought that this decision will be made sooner rather than later.
Donnarumma’s move will come down to wages
Should Amorim head for a first-choice goalkeeper this summer, Donnarumma is the obvious choice, considering that the goalkeeper fits within INEOS’ ideal age range at 26 years of age, while also having the experience and authority that a goalkeeper should have.
However, with the Italian international on around £300,000 a week at PSG, negotiating his contract will be a much trickier process.
United are trying to control their wage bill, with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro the only players set to be on over £300,000 a week once the transfer window shuts, provided Jadon Sancho is sold.
If Donnarumma signs for United, it would have to be on a reduced wage, and to pull that off, United’s board would have to do some very impressive pitching to a player who would be looking for his next big contract.
