Erik ten Hag has been slammed for one decision he made at Manchester United which is now causing a headache for new boss Ruben Amorim.
Manchester United had a poor season last term and it has gotten even worse this campaign with the club currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table.
One of the major issues that has caused this downfall is the poor recruitment at Old Trafford over recent years, particularly during Erik ten Hag’s tenure with the club.
The Dutch manager had a large amount of control in the transfer market but many of the players signed under him have since disappointed.
Ruben Amorim now has the job to deal with trying to improve the squad at his disposal and some of those players signed under Ten Hag could see the exit door.
Amorim has United headache after Onana failure
André Onana joined the club for almost £50 million in the summer of 2023 as a replacement for the departing David de Gea.
The Cameroon shot-stopper worked under Ten Hag at Ajax and was viewed as a necessary signing for United to take forward steps in their ability to play from the back.
Instead, things have worked out very differently and Onana’s latest mistakes against Lyon have caused many of the fanbase to turn on him.
Reports now suggest that a summer exit may be on the cards for the 29-year-old and that will mean Amorim has to find a new first-choice goalkeeper for next season alongside all of the other positions that need addressing.
Meanwhile, De Gea is shining at Italian side Fiorentina which has led to many suggesting that Ten Hag downgraded in goal while wasting cash.
Ten Hag slammed for United goalkeeping decision
Sky Italia journalist Massimo Marianella believes that it was a huge mistake that De Gea was allowed to leave United for free while Onana came in as his replacement.
In fact, Marianella went as far to say that Ten Hag will eventually have to “explain this choice to the football gods” and that it is an “inexplicable decision”.
Relayed by LabaroViola, he said: “ I don’t think he’s the worst goalkeeper in United’s history, but certainly in the modern era.
“United had one of the best goalkeepers of the last ten years in their hands, David De Gea. And what did they do? They let him go on a free transfer and then spent €60 million on Onana. It’s an inexplicable decision, which cries out for vengeance.
“One day, at the Last Judgement of Football, Ten Hag will have to explain this choice to the football gods. And he will not be absolved.”
