Rumours on Manchester United’s new permanent manger are beginning to circulate following the closing of the January transfer window
Manchester United have had a hectic season so far with Ruben Amorim’s sacking coming in early January following disagreements with the board. Darren Fletcher, the Under 18s head coach, then stepped in as manager for two games.
Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim manager has had a fantastic start with three wins out of three. Beating league leaders, Arsenal and second place Manchester City. Carrick’s reds look to continue this form against Tottenham on Saturday.
Carrick’s appointment is expected to end in summer with the board currently searching for available managers to come in. A new manager would be financially backed in the summer with transfers to fit their tactical setup.
If Carrick’s fantastic run of form as head coach continues then the United board will have to make a big decision over what is next for the squad. Manager availability will also be an important factor in the summer decision.
Roberto De Zerbi rumours spread as manager is ‘Keen to come to the Premier League’
Roberto De Zerbi is amongst the rumoured managers to be recruited by the United board. The Italian manager is currently head coach of Marseille in France who sit third in Ligue One but rumours of his possible sacking have began to spread.
Marseille were knocked out of the Champions League on goal difference following an incredible last second goal from Benfica keeper, Anatoliy Trubin. Tensions have now began to grow amongst the club which could lead to the managers sacking.
Journalist, Ben Jacobs, reported that “Roberto De Zerbi was relatively close to either being fired or walking away during the January transfer window, and Marseille’s president decided in the end to stick with him, but De Zerbi was quite close to saying he’s done”. “Flash forward to the summer, my information is that De Zerbi has decided to LEAVE then instead.”
Jacobs went on to say, “De Zerbi is keen to come to the Premier League.”. Manchester United would likely be looking into the availability of De Zerbi with his Premier League knowledge and impressive experience across Europe.
Availability of some of Europes top managers, including Luis Enrique revealed
De Zerbi managed Brighton in the Premier League for over 80 games, implementing a distinct style of play but left through mutual decision at the end of the 2023/24 season. With an impressive record, De Zerbi’s possible United appointment could see an exciting return to English football.
Paris Saint Germain’s manager Luis Enrique has also been heavily linked to United. The Spanish manager has an incredible trophy cabinet including two champions leagues for Barcelona and PSG. PSG currently sit on top of the Ligue One table and have made it through to the next round of the Champions League.

Ben Jacobs reported on the Spaniards summer availability saying “It’s completely fake news that he’s available in the summer.”. Though with just a two point lead in the league and high pressure knockout games incoming, Enrique’s future is not certain.
Xavi Alonso also became recently available following his early ending as Real Madrid manager. United will have to make a huge decision over who to pursue as future manager but the focus stays on backing Carrick at the moment.
