“Excited” – Paul Scholes tells Erik ten Hag ideal Man United pairing to fix ‘big problem’
Paul Scholes believes one Manchester United pairing could fix Erik ten Hag’s ‘big problem’ in midfield at Old Trafford.
The Reds have been dreadful so far this term and they have regressed since Ten Hag’s first season in charge at the club.
Paul Scholes has recently labelled the midfield balance as one of the ‘big problems’ that the Dutch manager needs to solve.
“He can’t seem to get it right,” the former Manchester United midfielder said last week.
“I think [that] ideally he’s a very attacking manager and he would like to just play one holding midfield player and the rest of them go forward, which is what he did at Ajax.
“It’s been a big problem for him. Can he play the one? Can he play the two? He’s struggled either way to really find a way of winning games and being dominant in games.”
Kobbie Mainoo has emerged as an option that could possibly plug some holes in the middle and Scholes believes that the teenager could make a good partnership with Casemiro, who is currently out injured.
“Once Casemiro gets back, hopefully, this lad (Mainoo) stays fit,” he told Premier League Productions. “He does have some issues with injury problems but so far he’s really a promising kid and I’m excited to see him.
“Last week against Everton, coming in for your first game, that was a tough place, that first half an hour he was brilliant and he was United’s best player coming into that team.”
Casemiro is due back in action in the New Year after suffering an injury setback at the beginning of last month.
