After Manchester United’s loss at home to West Ham, a former Premier League player was quick to criticise Ruben Amorim’s negative discourse.
After success in the Europa League semi-final, Manchester United turned their attention temporarily back towards the Premier League where they hosted West Ham on the weekend.
Ruben Amorim’s side couldn’t capitalise on their midweek victory as they lost 2-0 to the Hammers, where former United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka grabbed an assist.
Yet another dismal defeat saw United fall to 16th in the league, much to the frustration of Amorim who had some very stern words in his post-match interview.
Amorim highlighted a lack of urgency from his players, especially when defending their own goal, and also mentioned how they need a mentality change in the league.
Danny Murphy criticises Amorim negativity
On BBC Match Of The Day 2, Danny Murphy spoke about Amorim’s negative approach to interviews, and how he needs to provide more solutions than complaints.
Murphy said: “I get a little bit confused with some of Amorim’s interviews, and the amount of negativity I’m hearing come from him now.
He continued saying, “I’m not a big fan of a manager continually and consistently talking negatively about how bad things are and how bad it is.
“I’d like to hear a bit more solution-based answers, and a bit more positivity and moving forward and thinking forward.
“I always felt that the leader of the clubs I was at and the managers, they’re putting on a nice positive front and trying to be forthright and looking forward then it helped the players, rather than constant negativity.”
New approach needed for Amorim
After suffering their 17th league defeat on the season, Amorim’s side are heavily relying on their Europa League final to save their season, otherwise it could look like a very bleak summer for the Reds.
Whether this be a new approach in interviews, or a new approach on the pitch, it is clear that there is a lot that needs to change at United in order to climb the table under Amorim.
Despite all of this campaign’s misfortune, everyone at United can still look forward to the potential of Champions League football next season, and a busy summer of transfers.
Amorim will be hoping to prove all of his doubters wrong once he gets a few signings through the door, however, it doesn’t seem an easy fix.
