One of Manchester United’s former coaches has controversially claimed that Jadon Sancho would have ‘thrived’ under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Jadon Sancho’s spell at Manchester United has been disappointing for both player and club, and a permanent departure this summer is clearly needed.
It seemed that would happen when Chelsea initially agreed to a loan with an obligation to buy, but they later paid a penalty to back out of the deal.
Sancho’s camp have been exploring options in recent weeks, with Napoli among the latest clubs to show interest. However, a move could be complicated by his reluctance to take a significant pay cut from his current £300,000-per-week wages.
The whole situation regarding the 25-year-old is bleak. He joined the club in 2021 as one of the most exciting talents in Europe, and is now viewed as one of the worst-ever signings.
Sancho would have ‘thrived’ under Ferguson
Despite the general consensus about Sancho being negative, former United coach Rene Meulensteen believes that the winger’s Old Trafford career would have been different if he played under Sir Alex Ferguson.
Meulensteen, who worked under the legendary United manager, has suggested that Sancho would have ‘thrived’ in the tactical system Ferguson had used.
“Jadon Sancho could have thrived under Sir Alex Ferguson where he doesn’t under Ruben Amorim,” the Dutchman said.
“We would want wingers to get into 1v1s or 2v1s and that was the name of the game, stretching the play and taking people on, dragging players out of position to create space.
“In Amorim’s team, for the wing-backs to get into those positions you need the perfect pass and it’s easy for the opposition to anticipate.”
Meulensteen’s comments will split opinion
Those comments from Meulensteen will certainly split opinion, especially because most people do not see Sancho as a player who thrives in 1v1s on the wing.
Even before things blew up, Sancho received criticism due to his lack of directness on the flank under Erik ten Hag, which is the aspect Meulensteen believes he would shine at.

On the other hand, a lot of Sancho’s issues have been off the pitch and some would argue that he would’ve simply never been able to get away with any of it under Ferguson.
Ultimately, Sancho probably would have performed better under the legendary Scotsman, but so would almost every player who’s struggled at United since his retirement.
