European giants set to enter the race for major Man Utd midfield target

Manchester United are expected to sign at least one midfielder next summer, but are set to face competition from a European giant for one of their main targets.

After securing a new forward line and a goalkeeper, Manchester United are expected to turn their full attention to signing at least one midfielder next summer, as Rúben Amorim continues to shape his squad.

United’s midfield has been a major talking point this season. Many believe Bruno Fernandes has been less influential in a deeper pivot role compared to his usual position as an advanced playmaker.

Manuel Ugarte has also struggled to reproduce the form he showed under Amorim at Sporting, leaving uncertainty around his long-term future at the club.

Casemiro, meanwhile, has enjoyed something of a resurgence, playing a key part in United’s strong campaign and starting all but two matches. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, it remains unclear whether the club will choose to extend his deal.

Bayern Munich set to enter the race for Carlos Baleba

After being priced out of a move for Carlos Baleba last summer, Man Utd are expected to renew their interest in the Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder next summer as they address their lack of midfield depth.

While the club may sign a midfielder in January, any move for the Cameroonian midfielder would most likely only be possible in the summer. Sky Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri gave the latest update on a potential Baleba deal, revealing that Bayern Munich may enter the race, while also revealing the player’s preferred club.

With Leon Goretzka’s future at Bayern Munich uncertain, the Bavarian club may step up their interest in the 21-year-old’s signature, who features on their shortlist. However, Brighton’s latest demand of £74 million has caused some reluctance from within the club about paying such a high fee.

Tavolieri also revealed that Baleba has a clear preference when it comes to his next club, saying that his heart clearly lies with Manchester United.

European football next season is essential

Manchester United have failed to capitalise on the opportunities given to them to cement themselves in the top four this season, after disappointing back-to-back results against Everton and West Ham.

Given the unpredictability of this season’s Premier League, Man Utd have a great chance of finishing within the Europa League spots, with United finding themselves in 12th in the league. Despite this, just four points separate them from fourth-place Crystal Palace, with Man Utd having a game in hand.

It can’t be emphasised enough how important it is for the club to be playing European football next season, as it will have major ramifications for the players that they will be able to attract.

It has been reported that a move for Adam Wharton hinges on whether the club are playing in Europe next season or not, while Baleba’s head could be turned by Bayern Munich’s ability to offer regular Champions League football.
