Erik ten Hag sets timeline for Harry Amass first-team involvement at Man United
Erik ten Hag has set a timeline for Harry Amass’ first-team involvement at Manchester United next season.
Amass, 17, has impressed during the pre-season tour for United and started the last two games for Ten Hag’s side.
The young left-back provided an impressive display against Real Betis and managed to assist Amad Diallo’s goal with a delightful cross.
With the recent problems in the position, and Tyrell Malacia still being unavailable, many fans have suggested that the Academy player is ready for involvement.
However, Ten Hag has eased those expectations, with the youngster still needing to ‘develop some skills’. But the manager believes that Amass could be ready to contribute in the coming months.
Specifically, the boss suggested around three months for Amass to be prepared to play in the Premier League. He could be eased in with substitute appearances as part of that development.
“We have to make progress but we all see here a potential where we have seen in previous years,” explained Ten Hag when asked about the teenager.
“For instance, two years ago, [Alejandro] Garnacho last season. We had it during last season with Kobbie [Mainoo], but he is not that far now at this moment.
“Yet, if we train him well, if we coach him well, then, in three months, it’s possible that he can be on that point. But, in this moment, he needs to catch up and he has to develop some skills already to play for Manchester United, competing for the highest positions in the league.
“But, with big talent, it can go up very quickly and that is very interesting to see if he is capable of doing this.”
Luke Shaw will likely start the season for United but it doesn’t seem like it will be too long before Amass is able to provide consistent competition for the England international.
