Erik ten Hag has named the three conditions Manchester United require in order to win the Premier League title.

This season has consisted of many ups and downs for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag, from losing 7-0 to Liverpool to winning the Carabao Cup.

In the Premier League, United have sat fairly comfortably in fourth and now third place, with some touting them as outside chancers for the title this season – although recent results have scuppered this talk.

The title race is currently firmly in the grasp of Arsenal and Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta battling out a superb spectacle.

In his recent press conference ahead of the Europa League second-leg tie against Real Betis, Ten Hag was questioned on his assessment of if this United squad can win the title.

He explained that one condition the squad needs in order to achieve that goal is to start closing the gap between them and those above.

“I think we have made good progress, but we also have to acknowledge that there is still a gap,” he explained to reporters on Wednesday evening. “I couldn’t expect us to close that gap quickly.”

He also explained that the players need both time and consistency to create a Premier League title-winning squad.

“We are trying to win every game and we have beaten all of the top teams,” he said. “We are capable of doing it. We have to take the next step to do it more consistently. With time, we can do it.”

One aspect of England’s top flight that it’s famed for is the level of competition – something Erik ten Hag recognises.

“The Premier League was never that difficult as now; there are so many competitors,” he explained. “It is not a two-horse race; it is a five, six, seven-horse race.

“For what we want, there are six or seven clubs more [who want the same]. We are capable of doing it but we are aware within the club that we still have steps to go.”

Lisandro Martinez, who joined his manager for the press conference, provided a confident answer when questioned on if he feels this squad has the capabilities to win the coveted trophy.

“For sure,” said the Argentine. “We have really good players and we are Manchester United, who demand to win any trophy. We have to go game-by-game, believe and fight for every title.”
