Christian Eriksen was pictured with crutches after suffering an injury against Reading in Manchester United’s 3-1 FA Cup win on Saturday evening.

The Denmark international was brought off shortly after being on the receiving end of a reckless scissor tackle from Andy Carroll, who was later sent off in the match.

Eriksen has started 27 of United’s 32 games so far this season and has been a crucial member of Erik ten Hag’s midfield alongside Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes.

He was signed on a free transfer in the summer off the back of revitalising his career at Brentford last season after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match at Euro 2020.

However, United could be without the midfielder for one of the busiest periods of the campaign after he was seen wearing a CAM boot and using crutches as he left Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

“It’s always difficult to say shortly after the game finishes,” said Ten Hag when asked about the midfielder’s injury. “It’s the ankle. We’ll have to see the diagnoses.

“It will be at least 24 hours before we know that and then I can say more.”

Ten Hag’s team selection was questioned before the game as he put out a strong team against the Championship outfit. But the manager believes that consistency in playing his favoured side will bear fruit.

“I think players like to play and you can build and construct a good team if you play often,” he added. “And in my perspective when you play often the same, you’re getting the routines in.”
