Erik ten Hag has been proven right about one Manchester United star after a “pathetic” moment during the victory over Ipswich Town.

Manchester United secured a 3-2 win over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, despite going down to 10 men in the first-half.

A mix-up between André Onana and Patrick Dorgu gifted Ipswich an early lead, but Bruno Fernandes turned the game around with two precise set-pieces—one forcing a Sam Morsy own goal and the other converted by Matthijs de Ligt.

United’s momentum was halted when Dorgu saw red for a reckless challenge on Omari Hutchinson after a VAR review. Ipswich capitalised with an equaliser before half-time, but Harry Maguire’s towering header early in the second half sealed the victory.

Ruben Amorim would have been pleased with the fight which he saw from his team, but a lot of the focus on the night was on Alejandro Garnacho for different reasons.

Garnacho’s pathetic moment vs Ipswich

Garnacho came back into the starting XI after a positive cameo off the bench against Everton, to his own admission as well. “Much better second half,” he wrote after that game.

However, it was the 20-year-old winger who had to be sacrificed after Dorgu’s sending off, with Noussair Mazraoui coming on in his place.

Straight after he was taken off, Garnacho burst down the Old Trafford tunnel rather than walking back to the substitutes bench. He then took to Instagram 30 minutes after full-time to upload a cryptic post.

“I am going to talk with Garnacho about that,” said Amorim when asked about the Argentine heading straight down the tunnel.

“It was cold and wet,” he added. “The thinking was that we would play 5-3-1. That is a risk because he [Garnacho] is the one who can play one-v-one in pace. We had to choose someone to go out. It was my choice.”

Fans were far from impressed with Garnacho’s actions, with one writing: “Pathetic from Garnacho. Always difficult when you go down to 10, somebody has to make way and generally it’s a player in that position. He makes it all about himself, even if his team have to just grafted to get 3 points. Fed up with players like this.”

Ten Hag proven right about Garnacho

Garnacho came through the ranks at United while Erik ten Hag was manager. He got sacked in November last year after a poor start to the season.

The ex-United boss has recently been discussing the difficulties of dealing with modern-day players and his comments seem to ring true for Garnacho.

“This generation for example they usually finds it difficult to deal with criticism. Criticism really gets to them”, Ten Hag explained on an SEG podcast.

“The generation that I grew up in had much thicker skin. You could be much more direct.”

While this incident isn’t exactly criticism, the point stays the same and Garnacho has to address the way he deals with setbacks.

He refused to celebrate a goal earlier this season after one supporter criticised him before he walked into the stadium and has regularly taken to social media before to do questionable things, such as liking a post mocking his teammate.

Amorim, meanwhile, will be frustrated that the media will have their next focus despite his team showing the correct fighting spirit needed against Ipswich.
