Erik ten Hag will likely replace David de Gea with a new Manchester United goalkeeper this summer but will have to make a sacrifice in order to do so.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with two names in relation to their goalkeeper department – Inter Milan’s André Onana and FC Porto’s Diogo Costa.

David de Gea looks set to leave the club this summer with his contract expiring in under two weeks, and the player is yet to sign a new deal on reduced wages.

Erik ten Hag is said to be looking for a new No. 1 who is better with the ball at their feet and building from the back, which would further complement the skills of Lisandro Martinez.

When considering the two aforementioned names, Ten Hag must make a sacrifice, either in relation to this summer’s budget or the longevity of his squad.

If Manchester United were to sign Diogo Costa, it would likely be in the region of £60-65 million. For André Onana, the fee would be lower – around £43 million.

While Onana is 27 years old, Costa is only 23 – meaning the club would need to pay a premium for Costa’s younger age. If Ten Hag wants the extra years that Costa would have in the squad over Onana, it would come at a cost.

Considering that the club has a limited budget this summer, Ten Hag may instead opt to go with Onana in order to keep an extra £15-20 million in the transfer kitty to prioritise other areas.

Ten Hag must sacrifice either a goalkeeper with extra playing years ahead of him or pay a £15-20 million premium this summer. It’s a decision that, no matter what, will ultimately come with different pros and cons.

Both options, however, will hopefully allow United to improve their way of play going into next season.
