Manchester United have confirmed that Erik ten Hag has six injury problems as they take on Manchester City in the Community Shield.

After wrapping up their pre-season tour, Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United squad have returned to the United Kingdom to complete their preparations for the 2024/25 campaign.

Due to their participation in the 2024 European Championships and Copa America, key players like Lisandro Martínez, Bruno Fernandes, and Kobbie Mainoo were unable to join the pre-season activities. They have now reported to Carrington following their extended breaks.

As United gear up for the new season, which kicks off with a home game against Fulham at Old Trafford, they are set to face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday, August 10.

Although United and Manchester City had contrasting Premier League campaigns, United claimed a memorable 2-1 victory over their rivals in the FA Cup final. However, the club have confirmed that there are four players who are a doubt for the Wembley tie, including a surprise problem for Luke Shaw considering his lack of games.

“Harry Maguire missed the game (vs Liverpool), was a precaution but is still a question mark for Saturday,” Ten Hag told reporters on Thursday afternoon.

“So we have training, we have to see whether he is fit enough or not to be available. Victor [Lindelöf] played, but, also, he’s a question mark and also Azza [Aaron Wan-Bissaka] and Luke Shaw are both question marks; we have to assess them tomorrow (Friday).”

Further, he was asked if Lisandro Martínez may play at Wembley, to which he replied: “We [will] think about Licha to be involved in the game.”

He continued when asked if the Copa America contingent will play: “That is individual based, everyone has a different background, we put them on off-season programmes but they have different starts while we were in USA, we will assess them, make a decision whether they start, come from the bench or whether they don’t play.”

Beyond these four, it was also previously confirmed that Leny Yoro will be out for three months after undergoing foot surgery, while Rasmus Højlund will be on the sidelines until mid-September with a hamstring problem.
