“Strange behaviour…” Pundits stunned by Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United comments
Gary Lineker and Micah Richards have expressed their confusion at Erik ten Hag’s latest comments surrounding Manchester United.
It was recently confirmed that Erik ten Hag will stay as manager of Manchester United for the forthcoming season after INEOS conducted a “season review” regarding the club’s poor performance in 2024/25.
While some expected Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team to axe the manager, he will remain in charge for the future. The club are now looking to build its new project around him and talented youngsters such as Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Højlund.

Speaking on the Dutch TV channel NOS, Ten Hag said: “The club management came to me while I was on holiday in Ibiza. They suddenly showed up on my doorstep and told me they wanted to continue with me.
“As in any organization, it is wise to evaluate. Manchester United did that, too. The new owner (Jim Ratcliffe) is new to football, he has taken his time.
“They have indeed told me that they have spoken to other managers. That is not even allowed in the Netherlands.”
BBC pundits Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, who both played football across the highest level, have now expressed their bafflement at these words.
“Erik ten Hag, who has been working on Dutch TV, has admitted United told him they spoke to Thomas Tuchel,” Lineker told The Rest is Football podcast.
“It’s strange behaviour from the club and odd that he would admit that. It’s poor from the club. It’s extraordinary. I’ve never known anything like this.
“Who knows what will happen there because he also said they need to discuss a new contract. In his defence, and he deserves to be defended, he’s won two trophies at the club.”
Former Man City defender Richards said in reply: “He’s been disrespected, how bad is that?
“We were talking about Jim Ratcliffe coming in and changing things, hiring proper football people, and then you hear stories like this. It’s ridiculous.
“How can you do that? If I was the manager, I would say no problem, this isn’t for me. I don’t think it’s fair what’s happening.”
