Erik ten Hag was furious that Jules Koundé was not sent off for a foul on Marcus Rashford as Manchester United drew 2-2 with Barcelona in the Europa League.

United produced a promising display at the Camp Nou as they put themselves in a strong position for the return leg at Old Trafford next week.

Rashford stole the show, scoring once and creating the other goal for the visitors.

However, Ten Hag was not happy that referee Maurizio Mariani ignored a clear foul on the English forward mid-way through the second half.

Koundé clipped the onrushing Rashford as he was sprinting towards goal. He was the last man but the decision was waved on by the officials.

Ten Hag was animated on the touchline and furious with the decision. He was shown a yellow card but continued to vent his anger after the game.

“The refereeing had a big influence in this game,” he told BT Sport. “It’s a red card [on Rashford], he’s one on one with the keeper.

“You can discuss in the box or outside but it is a red card. I asked the referee why. He said it was no foul.

“We had the VAR and it is not good. Maybe they [referees] are influenced by the pressure but that can’t be on the highest European level.”

Rashford, who was at the end of the challenge, was also confused with the decision from the Italian official.

He questioned why they would think he would go down when he was through on goal, and with the form he’s currently in, it’s hard to argue with him.

“It’s a massive moment in the game. I’ve not watched it back, but in the moment I don’t understand why the referee would think I’ve gone down. It’s 100% a foul for me,” the forward explained.
