Erik ten Hag explains what Altay Bayindir needs to do to replace Andre Onana
Erik ten Hag has suggested that Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir will get his chance amidst the form of Andre Onana.
Bayindir, 25, moved to Old Trafford in the summer from Fenerbahçe to become the backup for Andre Onana.
However, Onana’s start to life at United has been far from ideal with several high-profile mistakes in the Champions League.
The Cameroon international most recently was at fault as Erik ten Hag’s side wasted a two-goal lead to draw against Galatasaray away.
Meanwhile, Bayindir is still yet to make his debut for the club. Onana was preferred in both Carabao Cup games that United have played this season.
The Turkish goalkeeper impressed on international duty and some fans are calling for his inclusion amidst Onana’s form.
Ten Hag has stressed that the 25-year-old has made solid progress since he joined the club and needs patience as he hinted that the Africa Cup of Nations could be Bayindir’s chance to prove himself as a potential no.1 at the club.
“We are very happy with our keeper group,” Ten Hag explained. “Andre, Altay, Tom (Heaton), as a group they do really well, they have good performances and they have to push each other.
“We are very pleased with Altay. He gets used to Premier League, he gets used to European football, which is tough when you are coming from Turkey but we are very pleased with the process. He is doing very well.
“He has to be patient but if he works well, if he keeps his progress, he will get his chances and he has to take this.”
Onana will likely be joining his country as they compete in the Africa Cup of Nations which begins in January.
That means Bayindir will get a run of games in the United net and Ten Hag’s mention of patience suggests that he will be seriously assessing how the goalkeeper performs in that time.
