Manchester United explain Raphaël Varane’s absence from Erik ten Hag squad vs Newcastle
Erik ten Hag explains why Raphaël Varane is absent from Manchester United’s squad to face Newcastle in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford.
Raphaël Varane did not start in Manchester United‘s 3-0 loss against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, with Harry Maguire starting in his place.
Erik ten Hag explained that Maguire was starting over Varane for tactical reasons, with the Dutch manager saying that Maguire was more well-equipped to play a team of City’s style than Varane was.
This, in theory, confirmed that Varane was match fit to play, and was left out of selection due to tactical differences. However, he has been omitted from the United squad entirely as they face Newcastle.
Manchester United have now confirmed that Raphaël Varane is not a part of Erik ten Hag’s squad due to illness.
Varane has suffered from injury problems throughout his time at Old Trafford, having missed over 20 games due to injury during these two and a bit seasons in the squad.
United vs Newcastle is due to kick off at 20:15 GMT.
