Erik ten Hag has explained his line-up choices as Manchester United face Leeds United during pre-season in Oslo, Norway.

Mason Mount has been handed his opening minutes under Erik ten Hag for Manchester United after the midfielder completed a £55 million move last week.

With the Dutchman fielding his first XI of the pre-season, the club will embark on eight fixtures throughout the next three weeks as they prepare for the oncoming Premier League campaign.

Speaking to MUTV ahead of the fixture, Ten Hag explained his line-up choices.

“I’m refreshed and the team is as well. It was a tough season [last term] but we have a foundation to build on now,” he replied when asked if he feels ready for a new season.

Speaking further on why he has selected so many youngsters in his squad, he said: “This is their moment. We have to improve the squad and you can do it with transfers, but also with players from the academy.

“Man United is famous for this, bringing young kids to the first team. Alejandro Garnacho did it last year. I hope at least one [youth] player who can join the group, have minutes and even fight for a starting place.”

Speaking on the first start for Mason Mount, Ten Hag said: “I’m sure he will contribute to the success of Man United because he is a quality player.

“His ambition is to play offensively but also he wants to be multifunctional – he wants to be complete. And when you’re playing in midfield you have to attack but also defend. I’m sure he will bring a dynamic into our midfield department.”

There was no mention of Fred, who is not in the matchday squad despite travelling to Norway. However, the club have confirmed that his “omission is purely a precaution and because he is managing his workload”.
