Emiliano Martinez’s brother has broken his silence on the Aston Villa goalkeeper’s failed Manchester United transfer in the summer window.
Manchester United were active on transfer deadline day this summer and managed to wrap up all of their planned business.
Although the Reds ultimately chose not to push for a midfielder, having failed in their attempt to land Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, they did secure a new goalkeeper and sanctioned several departures.
United paid around £18 million to bring in Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, but he wasn’t the only keeper under consideration. Reports suggested Aston Villa’s Emi Martínez resurfaced as a target, with the Argentine said to have already agreed personal terms with the club.
However, it is understood that Jadon Sancho’s insistence on joining Villa only on loan, rather than in a permanent deal, was a key factor in United turning their attention to Lammens instead of moving for the World Cup winner.
Martinez’s brother breaks silence on failed United transfer
Martínez was reportedly waiting by the phone on deadline day, after having spoken to Ruben Amorim and Lisandro Martínez from Old Trafford.
In an interview with DSports Radio Emiliano’s brother Alejandro stated: “I was told that Emi gave a lot as a professional and as a person, they love him, and you could see that on the pitch.”
Speaking further on his current situation at Aston Villa he added, “he is well-liked, and the directors didn’t want to sell him because he is the key player in the team, and another team wanted him. It was a commercial dispute.
“Emi never had an argument with Unai [Emery]. It was all within the management’s control, and the clubs couldn’t agree.”
Martínez’s brother makes Messi comparison
Martínez is now in a bit of a sticky position, with many Villa fans angered with his actions in the transfer market, even though he ended up staying at the club.
Despite this, his brother Alejandro believes that there will not be issues as Martínez has ‘legendary status’ at Villa Park, comparing the situation to Lionel Messi at Barcelona.
“At Aston Villa, he’s the Diego [Maradona] of Napoli. He gave a lot at Villa, like Kun [Aguero] did at [Manchester] City, like Leo [Messi] did at Barca. They’re legendary players, and it’s going to be hard to surpass what he did at Aston Villa.”

One of the main reasons some United fans wanted to sign Martínez was due to his mentality and the fact he didn’t seem to lack any confidence. It seems like it runs in the family.
