Dwight Yorke has come out with praise for the summer signing of Benjamin Šeško at Old Trafford, as Rúben Amorim looks to secure goals at Manchester United.
Benjamin Šeško joined Manchester United in August 2025 for an initial £66 million fee from RB Leipzig. Although he is rated as one of the most intriguing striker talents on the planet, many questioned the transfer.
His predecessor, Rasmus Højlund, struggled to lead the line for United under Rúben Amorim. Football circles concluded that this was, for the most part, down to the fact that the 22-year-old was not experienced enough.
So, when United brought in Šeško, who is four months younger than Højlund, the immediate question was why the club decided not to sign a more experienced player instead.
However, after a slightly slow start to life at the club, the Slovenian has notched goals in his last two starts and looks to be increasingly confident on the ball alongside his teammates.
Yorke hands positive Šeško transfer verdict
Speaking with The People’s Person, former United striker and treble winner Dwight Yorke was asked whether he feels Šeško will face the same issues as Højlund, or if the Slovenian will be able to break through at United – something that almost all the club’s fans have been thinking of late.
“Yeah, I think he’ll come good,” Yorke said. “I think he’s a better version of Højlund. I think he’s got more in his locker.
“[But] when you’re not coming at the best moment, you think you’re going to impact, but then when you get there, [he has to deal with] the goal opportunities that he’s not getting. The team is lacking in confidence, the team is losing against teams that we should be winning against.
“And for me, that’s a big concern because I always feel no matter what team, or how United are struggling, if you beat the teams that you expected to beat, then you’re not bad. But when you start losing against those teams, that’s really hard to accept.
“And so when you lose against the likes of City, although we don’t like that, or Liverpool or Arsenal, because they’re in a better place, you can kind of accept that if you’re a football fan.
“But when you start losing, no disrespect to Bournemouth and Crystal Palace and Brentford, which we have been doing, your confidence is going to go. We need to clear that bit up.
“I always do believe that United can beat those teams. [Then you] will find the likes of Šeško scoring goals. Sesko, for me, he’s got all the ingredients. He works extremely hard. You look at his goal tally.”
Šeško is much more rounded than Højlund
On the surface, both players feel similar. Højlund and Šeško are both known to be very quick with fantastic ball striking and look to crash the six-yard box whenever they can.
However, as United’s fans are learning, Šeško offers a much more rounded game compared to his predecessor. He looks to be much more physically imposing and, as a consequence, better suited to the Premier League.
Šeško has also shown himself to be surprisingly efficient with the ball at his feet, with his “relentless” cameo against Liverpool proof of his range of abilities both in and out of possession.
The 22-year-old has demonstrated on multiple occasions already that, more often than not, he is aware of where his teammates are around him on the field, allowing him to move with grace or drop deep and flick the ball forward.
With Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, the club’s other two attacking summer recruits, keen to run in behind and use their light-footed movement to wrong-foot defenders, Šeško is the perfect player to complement the duo in attack.
