“Don’t do this…” – Gary Lineker thankful that ‘nonsense’ decision was avoided during Arsenal 2-3 Man Utd

Gary Lineker was thankful that a ‘nonsense’ decision was avoiding during Manchester United’s stunning win over Arsenal on the weekend

Manchester United produced a memorable 3–2 victory over Arsenal in their Premier League showdown at the Emirates Stadium.

United were largely on the defensive in the opening stages as Arsenal dictated the tempo and eventually went ahead through an own goal.

Michael Carrick’s side responded positively, with Bryan Mbeumo capitalising on an error at the back to bring the visitors level.

The Reds ended the first half strongly and carried that momentum into the second, where Patrick Dorgu struck a superb goal to give United the advantage.

Arsenal equalised from a corner, but substitute Matheus Cunha had the final say, scoring late on to secure all three points.

United absolutely stunned Arsenal through Dorgu’s goal early in the second half. After some brilliant play between him and Bruno Fernandes, the Dane unleashed an incredible strike which hit the crossbar and went in.

Following on from the goal, there was a VAR check for a handball. From one angle, it looked like the ball might have grazed Dorgu’s fingernail, but it was inconclusive and the goal was awarded.

That moment concerned Gary Lineker, who stated that it was have been ‘nonsense’ if they had disallowed such a brilliant goal for that.

“If they had disallowed the goal for that, honestly… I’m already finished with VAR but that would’ve been [too much], it just came off his hip,” Lineker said on the Rest is Football.

“If it flicked his hand, I know the game has gone a little bit bonkers with that sort of thing, and we know the law says that if it hits your hand and you score in any way shape or form, it’s disallowed.

“But honestly, I was watching it going, ‘Don’t do this, do not do this’, as a neutral. As an Arsenal fans it’s a bit different, but you cannot do this nonsense.”

True football fans will agree with Lineker

Every true football fan would have the same opinion as Lineker. When you think about the ugliness of Arsenal’s football on the night, with Senne Lammens being clearly fouled for their second goal, it would have been a travesty if such a beautiful goal was disallowed.

Fortunately, it was not and it was a breath of fresh to see a team attack with quality and intent. United fans would have loved it but it was also a performance that gets the neutral excited.

Arsenal might be the best team in the league, and they will probably go onto win the title, but the way they play under Mikel Arteta is staggering.

The goal from Dorgu was a proper goal that fans want to see, and the winner from Cunha later on in the game was not bad either.
