“Disaster…” – Ex-Manchester United defender slams Ruben Amorim’s lack of flexibility

Ruben Amorim has been slammed for his lack of flexibility at Manchester United by one former defender.

Manchester United are having a very difficult campaign so far and the mid-season appointment of Ruben Amorim did not improve much.

The Reds currently sit 15th in the Premier League table and have struggled to adapt to the system Amorim wants them to play.

After taking charge in November, the Portuguese boss has been trying to implement his 3-4-3 system which saw him succeed at Sporting.

It would be an understatement to say there have been teething issues, and there have been calls for the United boss to make changes to improve United’s form.

Amorim slammed by ex-United defender

Former United defender Mikael Silvestre has been far from a fan of Amorim’s insistence to keep the same formation amid problems on the pitch.

The Frenchman thinks that the 40-year-old needs to show better flexibility as United boss, and that confidence is being impacted as a result of that – causing “disaster” performances.

“I don’t think the team would play worse if they were playing in a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2,” he told yaysweepstakes.com. “Because we haven’t seen any improvement in the relationship between the players since Amorim has come in.

“The flow of the game is not there, the confidence of the players is not there, and that is a recipe for disaster because the mistakes start to stack up as the pressure builds.

“You can see that in every United performance at the moment, simple passes going astray. Against Fulham, technically, the first half performance was a disaster.”

Silvestre added: “In modern football, you need to be flexible. You need to be able to adapt to injuries, and sometimes you have to adapt to an opponent that is superior to you, and when that happens, you normally want to match their system and focus on winning individual battles.

“I would have liked to have seen him show a little bit more tactical flexibility and given a few other approaches a go.”

Amorim can adapt without ripping up plan

Amorim has already admitted that he won’t change his overall plan, but will adjust different aspects to help his players.

We need to see more proof of this, but that’s all that is needed. There is no need to rip up his plan like some suggest.

As long as there is proof that the smaller adjustments can be made to improve his team, whether in a 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1, that is what is needed.

The formation isn’t really the concern for Amorim, but how he can adapt within his preferred setup to improve his team. That is still something we need to see more of.
