Diogo Dalot has been stellar for Manchester United during a season where Erik ten Hag’s squad failed to live up to expectations.

Manchester United finished eighth in the Premier League table last season, having been knocked out of Europe during the Champions League group stages – but an FA Cup win over Manchester City at the end of May was a saving grace for Erik ten Hag.

While squad performances were overall poor, Diogo Dalot, the club’s starting right-back, was fantastic. Dalot played 50 times across the campaign, scoring three goals and providing five assists.

His performances have earned him a starting role with Portugal for the upcoming 2024 European Championships. Speaking in a pre-match press conference ahead of their opening fixture, Dalot explained a message from his club compatriots that has given him confidence.

At the end of the campaign, Dalot was voted as the Manchester United Players’ Player of the Season.

“Individual trophies always end up being positive; in my case, it gives me more confidence, more motivation,” he told reporters.

“This recognition from my colleagues, from those who see me all, was great. every day, for who I suffer and with whom I celebrate. It’s a special honour.

“I think so (it’s the best bit), in individual terms. My career has been progressive. I don’t hide that it’s a good moment, perhaps the best in my career. But it’s worth it.

“If I don’t continue to demonstrate that I deserve to play… The work continues, day by day, in the same way, to be able to continue with the level of fitness that I have been demonstrating.”
