Diogo Dalot has hit back on criticism on his recent Manchester United performances after a hard opening few months under Rúben Amorim.
Rúben Amorim’s first two and a half months at Manchester United have been anything but straightforward since replacing Erik ten Hag.
Taking charge in mid-November with United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and securing just one win in the Europa League, the 40-year-old set out to rebuild a fractured squad.
There have been signs of progress, including impressive away victories over Arsenal and Manchester City, but inconsistency remains an issue. Under Amorim, United have won 10 of their first 20 matches, losing eight and drawing two.
Off the pitch, the challenges have been just as significant. Three senior attackers departed on loan during the winter transfer window without reinforcements arriving, while Lisandro Martínez could miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
However, there have been positives. United finally strengthened at left wing-back with the arrival of Patrick Dorgu, while 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven has joined as a promising prospect for the future.
Dalot hits back after United criticism
Of late, Diogo Dalot is one player who has drawn criticism for his recent performances with th eplayer having to start as an auxiliary left wing-back.
Despite a good display against Liverpool, the Portuguese player has been underwhelming in the more advanced role, with many fans frustrated at the lack of attacking threat he provides on the left.
However, when discussing his proudest moment as a United player, the 26-year-old has his back at critics by explaining that no matter how some feel about his performances, his desire, drive to succeed, and want to win for United should never be questioned.
“Sometimes you’re always expecting the most enjoyable moments to be winning trophies or winning games and, obviously, if I have to remember, I had very good feelings when we won against PSG away, when I won my first trophy, in the Carabao, when we won the FA Cup final. The game here last year against Liverpool when we came back,” Dalot told fans through club media.
“But I would say that the most proud moment that I have at this club was actually starting not really well, not playing a lot of times, and fighting for my place in the team.
“Now, listen, people might like my football or not, but they cannot say that I don’t give everything for the club. That I don’t go to the pitch and I don’t feel what this club is about. That is the thing that I always try to pass from myself and from my team-mates and for the fans.
“So that is my proudest moment so far: to say that I fought for a place in the team and tried to be a little more consistent about it.”
Dalot is giving Amorim vital stability
For the flaws that fans have pointed out surrounding his performances at left wing-back, Dalot’s reliability is giving Amorim much-needed stability.
When the 26-year-old first joined United, he was plagued with injury problems and inconsistent performances, and at one point was relegated to a rotation role behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
However, after a stint on loan with AC Milan, he has been an ever-present at United alongside Bruno Fernandes, and has played almost every single minute for Amorim across multiple positons.
The only times he has not finished 90 minutes was when he was rested against Bodo-Glimt and taken off with 10 minutes to play against FC Plzen, as well as after he was sent off against Arsenal last month.
During a turbulent time at United, Dalot is giving Amorim exactly what he needs right now in terms of reliability and availability, which the head coach undoubtedly appreciates.
