Michael Carrick has offered injury updates on a few of his Manchester United crop as they prepare to face Tottenham on Saturday afternoon.
Michael Carrick will be aiming to prolong Manchester United’s superb run of results as Tottenham Hotspur arrive at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Since the ex-United midfielder stepped into the job, his team have delivered statement wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Fulham, with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Bruno Fernandes all returning to top condition.
United are right in the mix for a Champions League place and currently occupy fourth spot, so Spurs’ visit offers another major opportunity to take maximum points and keep their attacking threat sharp.
Tottenham’s campaign, by contrast, has been far less convincing. Even after a 2-2 draw with City last weekend, they are still down in 14th in the Premier League. In the reverse fixture earlier this season in North London, Matthijs de Ligt popped up late to earn United a 2-2 draw.
On Thursday afternoon, Carrick explained the latest on the injured members of his squad ahead of the fixture against Tottenham.
Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu
What happened: In the second half against Arsenal, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu pulled up with a hamstring issue and was substituted with ten minutes to play. Reports then suggested he could be out for up to ten weeks.
What’s been said: “Pat, unfortunately, he’s going to be out for a period of time,” Carrick confirmed last week. “We’re still working through how long that’s going to be.”
Possible return date: Late March or early April.
Matthijs de Ligt
What happened: After starting and playing every minute of United’s first 13 Premier League games, De Ligt has been suffering from a back problem since the end of November.
What’s been said: “Matta [De Ligt], he’s working his way back, taking good steps and improving,” Carrick said on Thursday. “It’s a little bit too soon at the moment but, hopefully, it won’t be too long [before De Ligt is back].”
Possible return date: 23 February – Everton (H).
Mason Mount
What happened: Mason Mount was not included in the squad that faced Fulham, with 18-year-old Shea Lacey added in his place.
What’s been said: “Probably, Mason [will be available] sooner [than De Ligt],” Carrick told journalists. “He’s not too far away really. We’re hopeful it won’t be too long.”
Possible return date: 23 February – Everton (H).
