Manchester United are hoping to do some business for Ruben Amorim in the January transfer window although there have been conflicting reports on what can be done.

Manchester United’s performances under Ruben Amorim have been uneven, with just four wins in his first 12 matches, reflecting the challenges he faces at Old Trafford.

While some players have flourished under Amorim’s system, others have struggled to adapt to the 39-year-old’s methods.

It is evident that Amorim will require further reinforcements in upcoming transfer windows, with rumors already swirling about possible signings this month.

However, Amorim has admitted that the club need to sell in order to buy and many outside of the club have questioned how close the Reds are to the breaking point on the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Ornstein reveals United’s true PSR position

The Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) have led to major repercussions for various clubs, including Everton and Nottingham Forest.

United’s financial situation has been poor after misguided spending in recent years, particularly under Erik ten Hag, who spent over £600 million in the transfer market during his tenure.

Now, claims have been made that United are teetering on the edge with PSR and that has led to rumours about star players such as Kobbie Mainoo being sold or minimal transfer business being able to be completed.

David Ornstein has claimed that, while United’s financial situation is far from ideal, they are going to be fine when it comes to PSR this month.

The transfer expert also suggests that there is ‘scope to do something’ at Old Trafford this month in the market, which is interesting considering what has been reported elsewhere.

“The way it has been explained to me is that Manchester United are going to be OK on PSR this month,” he said on The Athletic’s podcast.

“It’s not like the walls are collapsing on their financial situation – it’s not great, clearly, they’ve got work to do. But I do think there is a bit of scope to do something [in the January window].”

United must be smart financially

While the Reds are clearly not on the breaking point, the new chiefs at the club are recognising the potential trouble they could be in if they continued to act naive with their transfer spend.

Signing players like Casemiro and Antony for huge fees and wages simply cannot be done anymore, otherwise United will be in trouble with PSR.

January signings are hard to pick up in any year, and often teams will try to overprice their players when approached. United cannot fall for any tricks this time around.

That may mean that deals are harder to come by, but as Ornstein says, there is scope for something to be done and those in charge will have to be smart with how they approach the window.

Because while the financial situation is certainly important, so is what happens on the football pitch, and Amorim needs reinforcements.
