David de Gea departed Manchester United in the summer of 2023 and was replaced by André Onana, who is going through a difficult spell.

David de Gea’s departure from Manchester United in 2023 marked the end of his 12-year tenure at Old Trafford, where he established himself as one of the world’s top goalkeepers.

During his time at the club, De Gea remained the first-choice keeper under multiple managers, including Sir Alex Ferguson in his final years, as well as David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

United ultimately chose not to renew his contract, partly due to his high wages. His exit came a year after Erik ten Hag took charge, with the club signing André Onana as his replacement.

The Spaniard spent a year out of football before returning to action at the beginning of this season, joining Italian club Fiorentina.

Meanwhile, Onana has been experiencing some major difficulties at Old Trafford this term, with the goalkeeper being heavily criticised for mistakes in recent months.

De Gea sends United message after FA Cup reminder

United are returning to FA Cup action this weekend and they play Fulham at Old Trafford and many will remember the last time the two teams faced up against each other in the competition.

The Reds secured a 3-1 victory in the 2022/23 campaign against The Cottagers in the FA Cup quarter-final but the game was not without its surprises.

Fulham had the lead until the latter stages of the game but then saw Willian sent off for a handball on the line – then Aleksandar Mitrovic also saw himself red carded. Manager Marco Silva made it a hat-trick of sending offs for his reaction.

It was a completely bizarre situation and United capitalised on it, scoring three goals and progressing to the semi-finals, however, it was a tremendous save from De Gea beforehand which allowed United the chance to make the comeback.

The official FA Cup account re-uploaded the save onto Instagram this week, where De Gea jumped across his goal to claw Mitrovic’s header away from the top corner. The Fiorentina goalkeeper posted the video onto his own Instagram account, captioned: “Good memories.”

United will be hoping to make more memories against Fulham this weekend, with the chance to reach three consecutive FA Cup finals since 1993-96.

Onana sweating ahead of FA Cup clash

Ahead of that game, Onana may be sweating as he could be dropped for the clash if Altay Bayındır proves his fitness in time.

The Turkish goalkeeper was the saviour for United against Arsenal earlier in the competition but he was available for the latest victory against Leicester City due to injury.

Ruben Amorim has not provided much information on Bayindir’s recovery but if he is fit for this game, he would almost certainly be set to start ahead of Onana.

Bayındır will almost certainly be eyeing his teammate’s position between the sticks in the Premier League as well, and if he can continue his form shown before his injury setback, there is no reason he can’t push Onana out of the team.
