Darren Fletcher sings praise of ‘direct’ Manchester United star following Burnley draw

Darren Fletcher has sung the praises of one of The Red Devils’ ‘fearless’ youngsters, labelling him as a ‘big part of Manchester United’s future’.

Following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, Darren Fletcher was announced as a caretaker manager for Manchester United. His first test was a trip to Turf Moor.

Fletcher coached his side to a 2-2 draw against Burnley, with Benjamin Šeško notching a brace, although they were incredibly unlucky not to take home all three points.

The Red Devils now sit seventh in the Premier League table after 21 games, and will next face a tough test against Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup at the weekend.

During their draw with Scott Parker’s side, Fletcher brought in youngster Shea Lacey for a 10-minute cameo, where he managed to heavily impress the masses.

Fletcher on ‘exciting’ Lacey

For many moons now, fans of the Reds have been demanding more minutes in the first team for 18-year-old Lacey, and after seeing his cameo against Burnley, it is clear to see why.

Having only been brought into proceedings at the 84th minute mark, Lacey offered much attacking threat for his side, and even hit the bar with a stunning curling effort.

Following the result, Fletcher spoke about his young attacker, and stated that he told him to “stay wide and go and do what you can do” when bringing him on.

Also, via Metro, the United caretaker said, “He is exciting, he is direct, he is fearless. He had a really bright game.

“I’m pleased for him. He has had a lot of injuries in recent years and he hasn’t been able to get his momentum going but we know the talent he has got. He will be a big part of Manchester United’s future, I have no doubts about that.”

Lacey to start vs Brighton?

After such an impressive cameo during the week, Lacey may have put his name in the hat to start in the FA Cup on Sunday against Brighton.

Especially considering that both of United’s first-team right wingers are still away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Sunday’s fixture may present Fletcher with the perfect opportunity to incorporate his fearless youngster.

Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu have been occupying the wings for the Reds since AFCON started, and Cunha especially could be due for a rest, given the fact that he has only missed 16 minutes of United’s last seven games.

A start at Old Trafford, against Premier League opposition, could do Lacey the world of good in terms of integrating himself into the first-team, and there may be no better chance given United’s current right-wing absentees.
