Crunch talks held, agreement reached – Manchester United make final transfer decision on controversial star

Manchester United have made a final decision on the future of André Onana after conducting a meeting with his representatives last week.

Manchester United are reportedly in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer, as Rúben Amorim continues to reshape the core of his squad at Old Trafford.

Following the arrival of Matheus Cunha and growing optimism over a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, Amorim is also seeking to strengthen both midfield and attack.

At the same time, André Onana’s future remains uncertain. While the 29-year-old has delivered moments of brilliance across his two seasons at United, inconsistency has plagued his performances, prompting speculation that the club could seek a replacement if he departs.

Onana has come under fire for recurring dips in form, which have occasionally undermined the back line’s trust in him.

Onana’s future decided after crunch talks

With Onana’s future seemingly uncertain, United had been linked closely with Aston Villa shotstopper Emi Martínez, who is reportedly keen to move to United if the chance arises.

However, a new report from The Athletic has revealed that Onana‘s representatives held a meeting with United’s senior figures last week, and it was concluded that the Cameroon international is expected to stay at Old Trafford this summer.

However, The Athletic also note that the club could still enter the market for a goalkeeper to sign as a backup who can provide Onana with competition.

Current second choice Altay Bayındır is expected to leave this summer in search of first-team football after failing to impress under Amorim.

Onana staying allows for more funds to be put elsewhere

While Cunha’s arrival was set at £62.5 million and Mbeumo’s transfer set to cost a similar amount, United’s transfer reserves are largely depleted due to their tenuous financial situation.

The club need to raise funds to continue acquiring players that fit into the mould of what Amorim wants at United, with Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Antony all likely to command significant fees.

Once this part of the operation is completed, the club will then proceed to sign a new striker and midfielder. As Onana is expected to stay, there will be little need to commit significant funds to the position.

These can therefore be redirected towards ensuring the next two signings are as high-quality as possible, with striker target Hugo Ekitike reportedly set to cost around £63 million this summer.
