Manchester United are set to receive their first transfer windfall of the summer as Real Madrid close in on signing a “standout” star.
Manchester United are in desperate need of raising fresh funds this summer as they work to overhaul Rúben Amorim’s current options at Old Trafford.
The club are looking to completely revolutionise their front line this summer, with Matheus Cunha already signed and a deal for Bryan Mbeumo in the works as United continue negotiations with Brentford.
However, signing the two wide forwards has taken up all of the club’s initial budget, meaning any further signings will have to be funded through sales, with a striker and midfielder high on the club’s priority list.
United are already actively trying to offload Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony this summer, with other players such as Rasmus Højlund also available for transfer at the right price.
United set to receive first financial boost this summer
While many of United’s players are of interest to European clubs, it looks increasingly likely that United’s first transfer fee will be due to a sell-on clause.
United sold Alvaro Carreras to Benfica last summer for a fee of around £6 million, retaining the right to secure 20% of any future revenue created for his sale, and now, it seems as if they will secure over double the initial fee.
According to A Bola, there is “confidence on all sides” that a deal will be struck between Benfica and Real Madrid for the left back to sign for Los Blancos for a fee of around £38 million, with just the final details needing to be ironed out.
With this in mind, United will receive just shy of £8 million for the player, although some will question why United sold him in the first place, considering his obvious talent and “standout” displays in Portugal last season.
United cannot rely on sell-on clauses for summer funding
Carreras is not the only player for whom United retain a sell-on clause, with similar deals also included in the contracts of Mason Greenwood at Marseille, Willy Kambwala at Villarreal, and Maxi Oyedele at Legia Warsaw.
Although United will be happy to receive such fees as a result of their negotiations in summers past, the club can not rely on these funds to secure the cash that Amorim needs in the summer.
Fenerbache and Napoli have shown interest in Sancho, while multiple Premier League clubs are eyeing a move for Garnacho, who will be United’s highest-value sale this summer with an initial asking price of £70 million.
Marcus Rashford is thought to be waiting for a move to Barcelona, and reports suggest United have accepted that this may end up coming in the form of a loan deal.
Antony has made it very clear to the club that he wants to return to Real Betis, with all parties working to come to a permanent agreement.
