Cole Palmer has quickly become one of the best players in the Premier League over the last two seasons and his prior support for Manchester United is well-known.

Manchester United have brought through so many players in their Academy setup and seen them flourish.

In recent years, we’ve seen Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho light up the first-team and become key players. They both scored in the FA Cup final against Manchester City last term.

However, many fans wonder how Cole Palmer slipped through the club’s grasps as a young player, with the 22-year-old instead coming through the ranks at City.

Palmer was a boyhood United fan and has since moved onto Chelsea, where he has become one of the best players in the country.

Since his debut for the Stamford Bridge outfit, Palmer has scored 39 goals and registered 21 assists in 70 appearances for the club.

Palmer makes United feelings clear

Palmer has never hidden his previous support for United and it isn’t exactly a strange thing for a professional footballer. Roy Keane supported Tottenham Hotspur as a youngster, for example.

But during a recent interview with Sky Sports, where he was challenged with different topics about his career, Palmer was asked an interesting question.

After explaining that everyone in his family influenced his love of football, he confirmed that the Palmers supported United.

Palmer was then asked whether it is weird to play against United now, or whether his support for them is ‘long-gone’ and if you have to let go of who you support as a player.

“Nah when I do go back to the stadium it’s good because obviously I used to go and watch matches there and stuff,” the Chelsea ace responded.

“[Wayne] Rooney [was my icon],” he added. “Obviously, I supported United and he was probably the best player when I was watching them.”

Palmer ended up choosing United’s all-time top goalscorer as his ideal attacking partner over Didier Drogba, Thierry Henry and Sergio Aguero.

United signing Palmer remains dreamland scenario

Palmer’s feelings about Old Trafford seem pretty clear and those comments have got some United supporters excited about a potential deal in the future.

There is only a pesky eight-year contract standing in the way of that.

It feels like a dream scenario for boyhood United fan Palmer to end up playing at Old Trafford, but something extreme would need to happen for such a deal to occur.

United and Chelsea do have an existing relationship with transfers. Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho are two players to have recently swapped between the teams. The Blues have also been eyeing Alejandro Garnacho this window.

But it feels like any business would be much harder when it comes to prying away one of the best players in the division.
