Christian Eriksen breaks silence on Rúben Amorim relationship before Man Utd exit amid Kobbie Mainoo claim

Christian Eriksen has opened up on his relationship with Rúben Amorim before his Manchester United exit at the end of last season.

Christian Eriksen spent three years at Manchester United, signing as a free agent from Brentford in 2022 before then leaving the club in the same fashion at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

The Danish international lifted both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup trophies under Erik ten Hag, and was initially part of a brilliant midfield trio alongside Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes.

However, six months into his first season, he suffered a horrid ankle injury, and once he returned to action, Eriksen never really hit the same heights.

After playing 22 times under Rúben Amorim after the head coach’s appointment in November 2024, Eriksen departed at the end of his contract and signed for the German Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.

Eriksen opens up on Amorim relationship

During the early few games of Amorim’s tenure at United, Eriksen was in and out of the side, starting against the likes of Ipswich and Rangers, but quickly found himself on the bench as an unused substitute.

In particular, a 2-0 loss to Newcastle at Old Trafford, in which he played 90 minutes, was an incredibly poor showing. Soon after that, United prioritised Europa League ties over Premier League games, and Eriksen found himself a second-string player in the less important games.

In a new interview with Sky Sports, Eriksen stated that, although he had a decent personal relationship with the former United boss, on the pitch he felt as if Amorim never really looked his way.

“As a player, I did not feel he was going to look my way, in every sense. Of course, then you struggle a bit football-wise. But person-wise, we had a decent relationship, nothing wrong there. He has one idea. Maybe I was a style of player not really suited for him.”

Eriksen has hope for post-Amorim United

After Eriksen’s departure in July 2027, Amorim eventually followed around six months later, dismissed from his job seven days into the new year.

Since then, Michael Carrick has taken charge until the end of the season, and recorded a stunning 2-0 victory over Manchester City during his first game back at the helm.

Continuing, Eriksen admitted that he feels “a new manager brings new ideas”, and that the appointment of Carrick is a signal that a “chance for everyone” will rise again.

The 33-year-old was then asked whether he was referring specifically to Kobbie Mainoo, who was completely shunned by the United side during Amorim’s tenure.

“I hope for anyone, it does not matter if it is Kobbie or someone else. I hope the club has success,” he replied. Others, such as Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, and Shea Lacey, are all expected to be given chances to thrive before the end of the season, too, after injuries and mixed form hindered their minutes.
