Chris Sutton has hit back at Manchester United fans following the Liverpool draw as he predicts Rúben Amorim’s trip to Arsenal in the FA Cup.

Manchester United start their FA Cup defence with a trip to North London to face Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

In May 2024, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo scored in the final, securing the trophy for Erik ten Hag’s side at Wembley Stadium.

Now, eight months later, United are led by 39-year-old Rúben Amorim, who replaced Ten Hag following his dismissal in October. Under Amorim, results have been mixed, but there have been encouraging signs.

When United visited the Emirates in December, Arsenal used two set-piece goals to secure a win. Even so, United have earned plaudits for their strong displays against top teams in away fixtures.

Sutton hits back at United fans

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton received a lot of backlash when he predicted that United would suffer a 5-0 loss against Liverpool last weekend.

Amorim’s men visited Anfield with many expecting the worst, but the visiting team played very well, battling out a 2-2 draw against the league leaders.

Speaking for BBC Sport, Sutton has now hit back at those United fans who gave his prediction grief, saying that when he made the prediction, many agreed.

“Well, Manchester United have cracked it now haven’t they, after that draw at Anfield?” he started.

“Some of the flak I have had on social media for predicting that Liverpool would win 5-0 was extraordinary.

“It seems like the bunting was out because I got a score prediction wrong, although oddly, I did not hear from anyone predicting a 2-2 draw before the game.

“I suppose it shows how far Manchester United have fallen that they are celebrating draws. I remember a time when any dropped points by them was treated as a disaster.

“They did play well, and there was a lot of excitement about their performance, but quite rightly a lot of people pointed out that now they need to back it up.”

Sutton predicts United’s FA Cup tie against Arsenal

The 51-year-old went on to explain that he feels although United must back up their positive performance on the weekend, they would find it very hard to do so against Arsenal.

“This is a very difficult tie for them to do that,” he explained.

“Arsenal have had a bad week and are massively missing Bukayo Saka in the final third, but I don’t trust United to get a result at Emirates Stadium yet.”

Sutton concluded by explaining that he feels the home side will run out as victors on the evening, with Mikel Arteta’s men clinching a 1-0 win that would send them into the fourth round of the competition, knocking United out at the first hurdle.
