Chido Obi stole the show with a hat-trick as Manchester United beat Chelsea 5-1 in the FA Youth Cup on Wednesday evening.

Manchester United’s under-18s side won three trophies last season but the prestigious FA Youth Cup slipped their grasps after a shock exit against Swindon Town.

The young Reds are once again having a promising season and hope to repeat the 2022 heroics in the FA Youth Cup this time around.

Victory against Chelsea in the fifth-round showed their intent. Adam Lawrence’s side didn’t just win, but they completely dominated one of the tournament favourites and knocked them out of the competition.

Despite going behind, United ended up winning the game 5-1, with Chido Obi scoring a hat-trick and James Scanlon netted the other two.

Obi is excelling in the FA Youth Cup for United, with seven goals in three games, and making sure that his name is getting to be known within the fanbase.

Amorim sent Obi message

Obi has been doing so well that Ruben Amorim was even asked about the prospects of promoting him to the first-team in a recent press conference.

The Portuguese boss played down the idea in the immediate future, suggesting that it is something he will re-visit in the summer.

“He’s doing his job, he’s improving, he’s playing in the youth teams, and we have also other players that can play in that position,” Amorim said of Obi.

“Rasmus and Josh are there, we bought these two players, so we need to improve them and then sometimes the confidence can change a player.

“We will see in the end of the season, but, until then, we have two strikers that can score goals. They proved it in the past. Let’s see if we can improve as a team, to help them to score goals.”

However, sometimes players can try and force the hand of the manager and Obi is certainly doing himself no harm with his form in the Academy.

No one really knows whether he is ready for the step up to the first-team yet. Not many would have suggested Marcus Rashford was in 2016 when he broke through the ranks.

Supporters are certainly allowed to get excited about Obi and a lot of other exciting talents within the Academy at Carrington but it will be down to the coaches to assess when he is ready to contribute.

Impressing in games like that, and making a positive impression in first-team training, is exactly what Obi will be focusing on until the end of the season.
