Chido Obi-Martin has been causing a stir in international media following his fantastic form for Manchester United’s U18s in the opening months of the campaign.

Manchester United have recently undergone a significant shift in their first team, replacing former manager Erik ten Hag with new head coach Rúben Amorim. Alongside this managerial change, the club are also investing heavily in their academy, focusing on nurturing young talent.

This summer, United bolstered their youth ranks by signing some of the best young prospects in world football, including Chido Obi-Martin, a former Arsenal academy player, who joined the club’s U18s in a surprising move.

Obi-Martin has been a standout performer at this level, tallying six goals and three assists in his first eight appearances. His debut was particularly remarkable, featuring a hat-trick that announced his arrival in style.

Most recently, the 17-year-old etched his name into the history books, scoring during a 3-0 victory over Stoke City’s U18s to become the U18 Premier League’s all-time top scorer. His record of 37 goals in just 23 appearances, spanning his time with United and Arsenal, is a testament to his extraordinary talent.

Denmark’s Obi-Martin worry

While the young star has been representing Denmark from the U16s to their U21s so far, there has been no guarantee that he will continue beyond this, as he is also able to represent Nigeria

However, Sport Witness explain that behind the scenes, Denmark are “making firm efforts” to ensure the United striker ends up representing them in the future.

This is according to Danish football association’s talent manager, Kenneth Heiner-Møller, and he revealed this to BT.

“We absolutely believe that he can become a top player. He has some finishing skills that are pretty fierce. And then he has a wild physique,” he said.

“That [losing him] would be very sad. If we were a club, we could offer him a bigger contract, better terms, a bigger car and a villa. But we are not a club, so we can only offer him to play in a Danish national team shirt. There is not much we can do.”

Heiner-Møller also made it clear that Obi-Martin won’t be called up for Denmark’s senior team just to secure his future.

“I hope that Chido will play for the Danish national team. But I can guarantee you that he will never, ever be selected for the senior team only with the aim of tying him to Denmark,” Heiner-Møller explained.

“I’m well aware there are some other countries that look at this sort of thing differently. And there will probably be some who think that it is unambitious and frivolous of us. But there are just other things that count more for us. We are not going to bind anyone to a national team that they do not want to represent in the long term.”
