Championship club eyeing double raid for Manchester United starlets as Rúben Amorim transfer plan falls into place

Two of Manchester United’s Academy graduates are being targeted by one Championship club this summer amid the next phase of Rúben Amorim’s transfer plan.

Manchester United have made four signings so far this summer, with Rúben Amorim intent on strengthening the spine of his squad at Old Trafford.

Business began swiftly, as Matheus Cunha’s arrival was confirmed on the opening day of the transfer window and officially completed two weeks later. Bryan Mbeumo soon expressed his desire to join, though drawn-out negotiations with Brentford meant the deal took six weeks to finalise.

During that period, United also secured 18-year-old left-back Diego Leon, whose impressive displays at Carrington have already earned him a place on the fringes of the first team.

The biggest move came with the marquee signing of striker Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig, pushing United’s summer outlay to around £214 million. The recruitment drive is not yet over, with a midfielder and a goalkeeper still being targeted.

Sheffield Wednesday eyeing United Academy duo

Last season, Amorim chose to place his faith and trust in several of his Academy players toward the back end of the campaign, with the club very much focusing on their Europa League run to the final.

Those such as Harry Amass, Chido Obi, and Tyler Fredricson were all handed Premier League starts, which was a fantastic look for the club and an excellent experience for the young Reds.

According to talkSPORT, Sheffield Wednesday are targeting Amass and his fellow Academy mate, Toby Collyer, for loans this summer, with United keen to see the duo gain vast first-team experience for the coming campaign.

Wednesday are in significant transfer trouble themselves after being hit with various transfer bans by the EFL, and they are currently barred from spending funds on transfers. So, in a bid to flesh out their squad, which currently only has 16 players registered, they are looking to secure loan deals from those above them in the football pyramid.

This could be a blessing in disguise for United, as Wednesday’s thin squad means Amass and Collyer would be almost guaranteed a starting spot for the majority of the season.

Amorim needs to free up space for more signings

After United failed to qualify for any form of European football for the coming season, Amorim’s squad does not need to be as stacked, as it means there are up to 18 fewer games this campaign than could otherwise be expected.

But, with two more signings needed, United must look to thin the options Amorim already has, and the exits of Amass and Collyer would work wonders in helping the head coach’s August transfer plan fall into place.

United want a new midfielder, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba top of their list, and Collyer’s temporary exit would free up space for the Cameroon international to join the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro, and Bruno Fernandes in midfield.

As for the goalkeeper signing, United are reportedly heading into further talks with Paris St. Germain outcast Gianluigi Donnarumma in the coming days, and while Amass’ exit frees up an additional spot, Altay Bayındır would likely have to be sacrificed to bring in the Italian.
