Having not featured much so far this season, one Manchester United star could be offered a lifeline by Serie A side Como in the winter transfer window.
Manchester United strengthened Rúben Amorim’s squad over the summer with a wave of first-team additions.
The priority in the transfer window was obvious: solve the team’s chronic shortage of goals. After managing just 44 in the Premier League last season, United invested £214 million to completely rebuild their front line.
Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha arrived to spearhead the new-look attack, while Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Rasmus Højlund, Antony and Jadon Sancho were all moved on.
One forward who did remain, however, is Joshua Zirkzee. The Dutch striker impressed in spells late last season before injury cut his progress short, and Amorim has chosen to keep him in his plans.
January move for Zirkzee a possibility
The Netherlands international, who has been described as ‘fantastic’, scored just seven goals last season and has only been able to pick up 78 minutes so far this campaign, partially owing to injury.
With his future at United seemingly in doubt, Como could offer the Netherlands international a lifeline as early as January.
As reported by Sport Witness, the Italian side led by former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas see the signing of Zirkzee as a driving force for future growth, as well as being able to contribute both now and in the future, something the 24-year-old can do.
Interest in Zirkzee is described as ‘concrete’, but it is not yet known if United would be willing to let the Dutch striker leave in the winter transfer window.
Zirkzee’s future at Man Utd
Zirkzee’s debut season was a mixed bag, scoring the winning goal on his debut for the club, but he failed to net again until December. At the turn of the year, however, his performances took an upturn, playing well in a deeper role, rather than an out-and-out striker.
The 24-year-old, who has been described as ‘fantastic’, unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury in April, which also saw him miss out on any pre-season action and the start of this season.
There were rumours of a potential exit for Zirkzee in the summer transfer window, but he has remained at the club to battle for his place. Unfortunately, with reports that United are looking to sign a back-up striker next summer, the 24-year-old’s time at Old Trafford may be coming to a close.
Zirkzee simply doesn’t suit Amorim’s tactical setup, as he is not a natural no.9. His best position is most likely in the no.10 role, a position where United have great depth.
