Casemiro’s contract renewal at Manchester United is ‘not ruled out’, and would potentially rely on one key factor if the Brazilian was to stay.
After a summer of heavy spending, many suspected that Manchester United would invest in some additional midfield depth, although this wasn’t to be the case.
It’s quite unclear as to whether United’s current midfield options actually suit Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system, or whether the Reds will need to invest in the January transfer window.
As it stands, Bruno Fernandes is playing in a far deeper role, whilst Kobbie Mainoo is restricted to substitute appearances, leaving Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte to compete for the remaining spot.
The Brazilian has been solid for the Reds at the start of this season, and has been a regular feature for Amorim so far. Due to his importance, a contract renewal has not been ruled out.
Casemiro renewal on the cards
Casemiro has now entered the final year of his contract at United, and as things stand, he will leave Old Trafford next summer once he becomes a free agent.
However, according to ESPN, United have not ruled out keeping their 33-year-old midfielder, although this would likely depend on one key factor.
In order to earn a renewal at the club, Casemiro would likely have to accept a pay cut, with United very keen on reducing what has recently been an extortionate wage bill.
Following the departures of high-earners David De Gea, Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford, the Reds are desperate to avoid unnecessarily high wages.
Casemiro’s contract possibilities
The club have an option to extend the contract of their South American star by an additional 12 months, although if this were to be triggered, Casemiro would remain on his current wage.
According to the same report, the Reds are planning a revamp of their midfield next summer, with at least one major signing expected.
With doubts currently surrounding the future of Mainoo, it may be wise to keep Casemiro, even if only for an additional season or two, as a potential stopgap.
As things stand, there is active interest from clubs in Brazil and the Saudi Pro League, although United’s well-decorated midfielder is settled in Manchester.
