Casemiro, in his few short months at Manchester United so far, has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

He has earned plaudits far and wide this season, putting in brilliant defensive performances at the base of Manchester United‘s midfield spine this season, as well as chipping in with a few crucial goals and assists, too.

Manchester United have a long line of brilliant midfielders from their ranks, with one midfielder in particular standing out for both his brilliance and longevity as a Red Devil; and Casemiro has picked Paul Scholes as the one United legend who he admired more than most.

“That’s a very easy question, it would have to be Scholes. He’s a player I admired a great deal as a child,” he said.

“I’ve mentioned this on numerous occasions, not just because I’m here now, I used to say this when I was at Real Madrid. He’s an idol of mine and it would be an absolute pleasure to play alongside him given everything he won here and what he represents to Manchester United.”

Casemiro has played alongside some of the greatest midfielders the world has seen during his tenure in the sport, including Ballon D’Or winning Luka Modric – and the Brazilian himself is often regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders to play the game.

Scholes and Casemiro would have been a formidable duo in midfield, and if the new £60 million man can recreate even half the impact Scholes had at the club, he will have been worth every penny.
