Manchester United’s second summer transfer window signing has hit a fresh snag as the club look to snap up Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
Manchester United are still in discussions over their second signing of the summer, with a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo moving closer to being finalised.
Having already secured Matheus Cunha earlier this month, Rúben Amorim is eager to further reinforce his attack. However, negotiations with Brentford over Mbeumo have proven to be slow and complex.
United’s initial £55 million bid for the 25-year-old was rejected in early June, and a revised offer of £55 million plus £7.5 million in add-ons has also been turned down.
Despite the ongoing back-and-forth, there is confidence that the transfer will eventually be finalised. Once Mbeumo arrives at Old Trafford, United are expected to proceed with player sales and target further reinforcements in midfield and up front before the Premier League restarts in mid-August.
Mbeumo remains desperate to join United
From early on in the summer transfer window, it was revealed that Mbeumo had made it clear to all parties involved that he had chosen to give priority to signing for United this summer despite interest from Arsenal, Newcastle, and Tottenham.
However, the two rejected bids have meant the deal has dragged on for longer than many would have liked, causing some panic that the deal may not go through.
But United remain confident. According to MailSport reporter Nathan Salt, Mbeumo is desperate to join Amorim’s side this summer, which is giving the club confidence that a final agreement can be reached.
United want Mbuemo in for the first day of pre-season, which is due to commence on 7 July. It has already been confirmed that Cunha will be taking part in that session, and the Brazilian has been spotted playing in a United kit while on holiday in Brazil.
United’s Mbeumo deal should still be finalised next week
While Brentford’s rejection of United’s second bid for the Cameroon international is undoubtedly a setback, negotiations are ongoing between the two clubs and an agreement is still expected to be finalised soon.
It has been reported previously that Brentford are happy with the base fee of £55 million, but that they want the add-ons to reach around £65 million, and that they want a large chunk of his transfer fee paid up front.
Therefore, with negotiations around the structure of the deal and the specifics of the add-ons, the main hurdles left, the transfer will hopefully be completed next week.
Should United wrap up the transfer soon, Mbeumo may be able to attend United’s first day of pre-season training on 7 July.
