Bryan Mbeumo’s expected wage at Manchester United has finally been revealed after several false reports emerged this week.
Manchester United have made a strong start to the summer transfer window, kicking things off by confirming the arrival of Matheus Cunha on day one.
Attention quickly turned to Bryan Mbeumo, who made it clear to clubs like Newcastle, Tottenham and Arsenal that his preference was a move to Old Trafford.
After seeing an opening bid for the Brentford forward rejected, reports suggest United are ready to submit a second offer, which could rise to £60 million.
During this process, there have been rumours flying around about his potential salary, with one Newcastle-based reporter claiming that the 25-year-old is demanding £250,000-per-week.
Mbeumo’s expected salary at United
Mbeumo is currently earning around £50,000-per-week at the Gtech Community Stadium, which made these rumoured demands hard to believe.
Fabrizio Romano since confirmed that, contrary to reports suggesting he is asking for an excessive salary, the forward’s actual request is simply to earn a wage in line with Cunha and other key players at United.
“For sure he wants an important salary but nothing different compared to other players, like Cunha and more,” Romano explained. “It’s normal. When you go to this sort of clubs, you always request an important salary.”
Reports elsewhere have claimed that Cunha is set to receive a total package of around £200,000-per-week with all bonuses included and now The Mirror have detailed Mbeumo’s expected wage at Old Trafford.
Their information states that United are willing to offer the player a wage package of £150,000-per-week which then can rise to around £200,000-per-week with add-ons.
The most significant add-on in this case would be securing Champions League football, as without European competition, the Reds all have their wages cut by around 20 per cent.
While many journalists are likely to report the £200,000-per-week figure for Mbeumo and Cunha’s wages, it seems like they will actually be earning closer to the £150,000-per-week mark until the club return to European competition.
Mbeumo rumours were lazy journalism
It was lazy journalism to assume that United would be paying mega wages to Mbeumo just because they have done so in the past.
If you had paid attention to the club at all since Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS took charge, it would be clear that this is just not the way they can – or want to – operate anymore.
That is why almost every high-earner from the previous regime is up for sale and why every contract given under INEOS – apart from the one for Bruno Fernandes – has been a total package under £200,000-per-week.
Even then, the second highest earner of those INEOS have offered contracts to behind Matthijs de Ligt is Noussair Mazraoui on £135,000-per-week. Again, these figures are all slashed without European football.
A report from the Telegraph this week explained how United have been offering far more incentivised contracts with lower base salaries over the past 18 months and that is going to continue to happen.
But we all know that it is much easier for other clubs to make themselves believe that players do not want to come to United anymore, and that they are only joining for the money.
