Bryan Mbeumo has been handed a verdict on why he has been the Premier League’s signing of the summer following his Manchester United heroics.
Manchester United invested more than £200 million on four new signings in Rúben Amorim’s first summer transfer window: Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Šeško and Senne Lammens.
While Lammens has quickly become a fan favourite and Šeško has offered promising glimpses of his potential, it is Cunha and Mbeumo who have driven the side forward.
Mbeumo currently tops United’s scoring charts with six goals, five of them coming in the Premier League, while Cunha has played a key role in statement wins over Liverpool and Brighton.
With only one defeat in their last seven league games, United will look to maintain their positive trajectory as they head into the challenging winter schedule.
Mbeumo told why he’s been signing of the summer
While United’s season has been very mixed in terms of form, there has been no denying that Mbeumo has been an absolutely stunning transfer move by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and United’s decision-makers.
The same can be said for both Newcastle and Liverpool – despite poor team performances at times, strikers Hugo Ekitike and Nick Woltemade have been fantastic. However, according to former Red Louis Saha, Mbeumo has been the best of the lot because he’s been thrown into the “toughest” situation.
“For me, the best signing is between Hugo Ekitike and Bryan Mbeumo,” Saha told Pundit Arena. “I think Woltemade has been brilliant too. I love him.
“I think those three have been the standout players so far, but I think that Mbeumo has probably been the very best of the three. He’s playing for a side that is in transition. Ekitike is playing for the league champions, and Woltemade arrived at a team that is in the Champions League.
“They both have their problems, of course, but I think United were in the toughest place at the start of the season. I’ve seen United struggle, and how hard it was for Mbeumo, and he’s done brilliantly to raise standards at the club and keep his own standards up.”
Fernandes will need to step up during AFCON
Mbeumo’s brilliance over the last few months has been perfect for keeping United afloat despite dodgy displays, which makes his departure to the Africa Cup of Nations even harder to swallow.
United will be without the Cameroon star and the Ivory Coast’s Amad for up to a month, ruling them out of their two first-choice options on the right-hand side of attack.
In Mbeumo’s absense, Bruno Fernandes will need to be the man to step up and take over the 26-yera-old’s suply line of goals. Fernandes is known as a prolific player in the area, but this season, he has been used as a central midfielder by Amorim.
With Mbeumo and Amad gone, Fernandes could step up to the right-hand side role and play closer to the area, helping to nullify the damage done by their departures and allow Kobbie Mainoo to take over the midfield role.
