Bryan Mbeumo is being influenced by two key figures as his potential Manchester United transfer moves closer after a fresh approach was made by the Reds.
Manchester United made a hectic start to the summer transfer window as they looked to bounce back from their disastrous 2024/25 season.
In the opening week alone, Matheus Cunha was signed, Bruno Fernandes’ stay was confirmed, and an initial bid for Bryan Mbeumo was submitted.
Since then, progress had stalled—particularly on the Mbeumo front—but it has now been confirmed that a second offer, worth £60 million, has been submitted to Brentford.
It was originally reported that the Bees were searching for a price similar to what United paid for Cunha, which was £62.5 million in total.
Mbeumo being influenced by two key figures
Mbeumo’s preference to join the club was a huge early boost, especially when he was being chased by Newcastle and Tottenham – two clubs playing in the Champions League next season.
It was previously reported that André Onana had spoken to the Brentford star following the club’s first bid for him.
Now, The Athletic have stated that the Cameroon pair have continued that contact and spoken about linking up at Old Trafford next season.
Onana isn’t the only person trying to convince Mbeumo of the move. The Manchester Evening News have added that one of the player’s close relatives is also a United fan, which is believed to have further emboldened United.
While it is not known whether Mbeumo himself grew up as a United fan, he did admit that his first-ever football shirt had United legend Cristiano Ronaldo on the back of it and he has named Wayne Rooney as his favourite-ever English player.
Sir Alex Ferguson still influencing United transfers
Sir Alex Ferguson is still doing some heavy lifting for United in the transfer window. The likes of Cunha and Mbeumo grew up during the latter years of his success with the club.
Mbeumo most likely admired the club at the very least, while Cunha has admitted that he was a fan after his cousin convinced him to support the Reds.
Speaking during his first interview as a United player, the Brazilian’s admiration for that generation of team was obvious and a clear reason why he loves the club and wanted to join.
“Of course, I can mention a lot of players,” replied Cunha when asked to speak about the team he watched growing up after praising Rooney.
“Ronaldo, everyone knows it is easy to talk about him. Ryan Giggs, everyone! I can see the team, Edwin van der Sar in goal, wow!
“Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic in defence, Paul Scholes, wow, Michael Carrick. That team for me had a big impact on my teenage years.”
United fans will be hoping to hear similar from Mbeumo in the next couple of weeks.
