I heard what Bruno Fernandes shouted at the referee against Tottenham – He is spot on

Bruno Fernandes has not had much luck lately with referee decisions, having received two yellow cards in a row.

Manchester United have started the season poorly, winning just three of their opening ten fixtures, with many players such as Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martínez taking a lot of criticism.

Manager Erik ten Hag has experienced the same, but in the case of Fernandes, he has been uncharitably rash.

Although Fernandes has always had a hot streak and a temper about him, he has always managed to just about tread the right side of the line with referees, but he suffered the consequences against Tottenham and FC Porto.

After slipping while aiming to make a challenge on James Maddison, Fernanes made contact with the player’s shin, with referee Chris Kavanagh reaching for a red card and having his decision backed by VAR.

Just days later, the Portuguese international was then handed two yellow cards for two separate high-foot challenges against FC Porto.

Fernandes’ red against Tottenham has been rightly overturned, and the VAR conversation has been revealed, to which many are shocked at the lack of concise thinking.

However, what is more interesting in this footage, and has been pointed out by fans, is that you can hear exactly what Fernandes told Kavanagh as he handed him the red card: “You’re only doing this because it’s me!”

The 30-year-old is spot on. Fernandes has a perceived reputation of being a dirty or less-than-fair player, but the truth is far from it.

He has a reputation for diving or being excessive with his reaction to challenges, but the truth is that his actions are no different than most Premier League players.

He is often double-teamed or hunted by opposition defenders in efforts to stop him, and it seems as if the referee has been duped into believing it’s a red card simply because of who made the challenge.

The swift overturning of the decision despite VAR’s initial backing speaks volumes about the current state of officiating in this country. Although the technology is there to help correct errors, those in charge of working it are not good enough.
