Mason Mount is having his best season so far in a Manchester United shirt, and Bruno Fernandes has been one to praise the 26-year-old.
After a long spell marked by injury and inconsistency, Mason Mount is starting to reassert himself at Manchester United. His recent displays suggest a player growing in confidence and authority, offering fresh optimism about his long-term place under Rúben Amorim.
Mount’s opening two campaigns at United were repeatedly interrupted by fitness problems, denying him any real momentum. Arriving in 2023 to inject energy and intelligence into midfield, he instead found himself stuck in a frustrating loop of setbacks that limited his influence.
That pattern now seems to be shifting. The 26-year-old is enjoying his most reliable run of availability since arriving at the club, and the impact is clear. United have won 71% of their Premier League matches when Mount starts, compared to just 25% when he is absent.
Goals away at Crystal Palace and Wolves have added welcome end product, but his broader influence has been just as valuable. His pressing, positional awareness and ability to link play in advanced areas have all played a key role in United’s improved performances.
Fernandes waxes lyrical about Mount
One player with whom Mount has been forming a brilliant partnership this season is club captain Bruno Fernandes, who has assisted two of his three goals.
Speaking with club legend Rio Ferdinand, Fernandes discussed his risk-taking style of football, and, of all United’s attackers, he pointed to Mount and his “unbelievable” finishing first.
“I really look at details, you know,” Fernandes told Ferdinand on his show, Rio Meets. “Like, I know that sometimes I’m gonna miss [the pass], it’s not gonna be the best one and everything, but I’m very aware that if I take it, if I take the right pass in the right moment, Mason is unbelievable at finishing.
“[Matheus] Cunha, Bryan [Mbeumo], Ben [Šeško], and Josh [Zirkzee]; they’re very good with the ball. They’re unbelievable players. They just need that moment of getting the ball in the right position, they’re gonna score a goal for us.”
Mount has been showing off his effectiveness this season
It’s taken Mount just over two years to properly show off his skill set to United fans following his £50 million move from Chelsea, but under Amorim, he’s finally flourishing.
Fitness has always been a significant problem for Mount, but for the most part, this campaign, he’s stayed fit, and his three goals have shown exactly why Fernandes rates his finishing abilities so highly.
His first of the season, scored against Sunderland, was exquisite. Mbeumo’s cross from the right flank flew at him awkwardly, but his brilliant first touch and calm, slotted finish from the edge of the area was one of pure talent.
Then, his shot from range against Palace was a perfectly-placed first-time effort, while the goal against Wolves was a laser-focused first-time volley after a perfect dart into the area to latch onto Fernandes’ cross.
Mount has become a secret weapon under AMorim this season, and with Mbeumo and Amad both at the Africa Cup of Nations for the next few weeks, he could be essential.
